Providence College Men’s Lacrosse Falls To Siena, 13-11

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men’s lacrosse team fell to Siena, 13-11, on Saturday, March 23 at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. Andrew Barton (Timonium, Md.) led the Friar effort with a game-high five points on three goals and two assists.

Providence got on the board first as JT Weber tallied his 13th goal of the season off a feed from Barton just 3:46 into the game. The Saints answered with back-to-back goals to close the first quarter. The first was scored by Danny Martinsen with 1:38 remaining on the clock, and was assisted by Ryan Mallon. The Saints pulled ahead, 2-1, with just 13-seconds left in the quarter as Colin Clive found the back of the cage off a feed from Martinsen.

Siena started the scoring in the second quarter as Colin Prunty notched an unassisted tally at the 13:35 mark. Providence answered with a goal by Robert Stack (Medfield, Mass.) at 11:04, which was assisted by Kevin Blair (Hingham, Mass.) to make the score 3-2. Nate Barry and Clive responded with back-to-back goals to put Siena ahead 5-2. Barry’s goal was during a man-up situation and assisted by Prunty. Clive found the back of the net at the 4:14 mark off a feed from Martinsen.

The Friars regained some momentum on an unassisted tally from Sean Wright (Silver Spring, Md.) with just three-seconds left on the clock. It marked Wright’s team-leading 23rd goal of the season as he beat the goaltender in the upper left hand corner of the cage. The two teams went into halftime with Siena leading 5-3.

In the third quarter, the Friars outscored the Saints, 5-4. Providence started the action with an unassisted tally from Barton, marking his 16th goal of the season. Barton’s goal cut the deficit to 5-4. Siena answered with a pair of goals at 10:58 and 8:08 to extend its lead to three goals (7-4).

Providence battled back with a pair of unassisted goals from Barton (17) and Wright (24) at 6:54 and 5:32, respectively. The duo got the Friars back within one (7-6). The two teams traded goals down the stretch and the game went to the fourth quarter with Siena leading, 9-8. In the final stretch of the third quarter, Barton tallied his 18th goal of the year and Daniel Textor (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) notched his first of the game and fifth of the season.

The Saints scored three of the first four goals in the fourth quarter, helping Siena to a 12-9 lead with 8:02 to play. The Friars answered with two of the quarter’s three goals down the stretch, but the three-goal deficit proved too large to overcome. Textor, Greg FitzMaurice (Huntington, N.Y.) and Weber were credited with the Friar goals in the final stanza, while Blair and Barton picked up their ninth and 10th assists, respectively.

For the game, Providence outshot Siena, 42-35. The Saints held the advantage in ground balls (28-26) and face-offs, having won 15 of 28 opportunities.

Friar goaltender Jack Connelly (Kenilworth, Ill.) played all 60 minutes and recorded 12 saves. Matt Sharp played 60 minutes in goal for Siena and earned the victory with 14 saves.

The Friars return to action on Tuesday, March 26 against intra-state rival Bryant University. The game will be played in Smithfield, R.I.
