WALTHAM, Mass. – In the season-opener for the men’s lacrosse team, Bentley University battled back-and-forth with No. 6 NYIT, but the Falcons were beaten in the end 10-8 in a hard fought encounter.
A 5-0 run by the Bears that spanned the third and fourth quarters was the difference after Bentley led 7-5 more than halfway through the third quarter.
With the game tied 5-5 after NYIT scored early in the 3rd, the Falcons scored two straight from junior Nick Astarita (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) at the 8:57 mark, and sophomore Doug Mahony (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) at the 5:40 mark to take the 7-5 lead.
But Mahony’s goal would be Bentley’s last until deep into the fourth quarter. A man-up goal by NYIT’s A.P. Nist with 1:23 remaining in the third tied the game at seven. Neither team scored again until the 7:53 point of the fourth quarter when Nist found the back of the net again to give the Bears the lead for good at 8-7. Cory Triola and Luke Miller added goals for NYIT to give them a 10-7 advantage with 3:10 remaining in the contest.
Bentley got to within two goals when sophomore Brendan Murphy (Wilmington, Mass./Middlesex School) scored with 2:15 to go, and they had a chance to cut the deficit further when NYIT was whistled for a one minute cross checking penalty on the goal.
However, Bentley’s man-up was unable to take advantage, and the Bears held on for the win.
Eight different players scored for Bentley, and Astarita and sophomore Matt Dente (Reading, Mass./Reading) each had two assists. Senior Josh Baker (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) got the start in goal for the Falcons and made 12 saves.
The Falcons, who fall to 0-1 on the young season, will next play LIU Post at home next Saturday at 1:00 pm.
