Providence, R.I. – The Providence College men’s lacrosse team is set to host Vermont in its home opener on Sat., Feb. 23 at 12:00 p.m. The game has been moved up from its original 1:00 p.m. start time due to impending inclement weather that is scheduled to reach the area. Providence enters Saturday’s game with an overall record of 1-0 (0-0 BIG EAST) after defeating Wagner in its season opener, 17-6.
In the Win over Wagner on Fri., Feb. 15 the Friars tallied the most goals scored by Providence in a single game since April 17, 2002 when it topped Holy Cross, 19-4. Eleven players notched goals in the victory including four Friars who tallied multiple goals. Senior JT Weber (West Hartford, Conn.) and junior Sean Wright (Silver Spring, Md.) each recorded a hat-trick in the win. In addition the duo dished out two assists apiece, for a combined 10 points. Junior Andrew Barton (Timonium, Md.) and freshman Kevin Blair (Hingham, Mass.) each added two goals to help the Friars to the victory.
Junior Ryan Shaw (East Hampton, N.Y.) dominated at the face-off “X,” finishing 16-of-19 (84.2 percent). In addition Shaw collected a game high 12 ground balls.
Freshman goalie Jack Connelly (Kenilworth, Ill.) recorded 50 minutes between the pipes for Providence, tallying 13 saves and a win in his collegiate debut.
SCOUTING VERMONT: The Catamounts finished their 2012 campaign with an overall record of 2-12 (1-4 AMERICA EAST). Vermont returns 28 players and welcome’s 13 freshman. Three returning players notched double figures in scoring last season including Drew Philie, Connor McNamara and A.J. Masson with 34, 16 and 15 points, respectively. Philie tallied a team high 29 goals in 2012. Vermont was picked to finish sixth in the America East in its 2013 season. On Sat., Feb. 16 Vermont dropped its first game of the season to No. 10/11 Colgate, 13-7. Four different Catamounts notched goals in the loss including junior Grahm Horvath who tallied a hat-trick. Philie added two goals and an assist. Sophomore goalie Dan DiStefano played all 60 minutes between the pipes and tallied nine saves in the loss.

The University of Vermont men’s lacrosse team faces off against Providence on Saturday (Feb. 23) at 12 p.m. in Providence, R.I.
LAST TIME OUT
The Catamounts dropped their season opener 13-7 against No. 10 Colgate this past weekend. Junior transfer Graham Horvath led the way for Vermont with a hat trick in his first career game at UVM. Drew Philie added two goals and an assist to move his point-scoring streak to 35 straight games. Dan DiStefano played all 60 minutes in net and stopped nine Colgate shots in his first career start.
The Friars kicked off their 2013 campaign with a 17-6 win at Wagner last Friday. JT Weber and Sean Wright each notched a hat trick and two assists to pace Providence. The 17 goals marked the most scored by the Friars since 2002.
Providence was picked to finish seventh in the Big East Preseason Coaches’ Poll after going 2-12 overall and 1-5 in Big East play last season. The Friars return two of their top three goal scorers from a season ago in Weber and Andrew Barton.
Vermont leads the all-time series 12-4 over Providence. The two teams have not met since 2006, when the Catamounts defeated the Friars 8-6 in Burlington.
