UMass Kicks off NEILA Season at Number One

Fairfield, CT – UMASS kicks off the 2013-13 season at the top of the NEILA Coaches Poll after their impressive win over #4 North Carolina. The Minutemen were led by senior at- tack Kyle Smith and junior attack and midfielder Connor Mooney, who both notched four points on three goals and one assist. UMASS scored four unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to complete the upset victory.

Fairfield comes in at the two spot after their NEILA home victory over the Bryant Bulldogs, 8-6, on Saturday afternoon. Bryant is positioned at the four spot in this week’s poll. NEILA Player of the Week Jordan Greenfield paced the Stags, scoring half of their eight goals in the victory, including three tallies in the fourth quarter. Fairfield takes on Navy on Tuesday, while Bryant hopes to rebound on Saturday at Bucknell.

Yale secures the number three spot; the Bulldogs open their season on Saturday at St. John’s. Harvard, Brown, and Dartmouth come in at the #5, 6 and 7 spots respectively, all opening their seasons this weekend on Saturday. Harvard takes on #5 UMASS, Brown hosts Quinnipiac and Dartmouth travels to #10 Colgate.

Providence rounds out the poll at the eighth spot after a 17-6 win over Wagner last week. Senior attack JT Weber and junior attack Sean Wright each notched a hat-trick in the Friars’ victory.

Three NEILA teams made it into the USILA Top 20 rankings this week; UMASS at #5, Fairfield at #15, and Yale at #17.


Anaconda/Sports Lids NEILA Player of the Week

Jordan Greenfield, Junior, Attack, 5-10/170, Dover, Mass./Rivers School

Greenfield had a career-day in leading the Stags to an 8-6 win over Bryant on Satur- day, as he netted four goal including the game-winner. Greenfield scored three of his four goals in the fourth quarter, tying the game- 5-5, giving the Stags a 6-5 lead, and then putting Fairfield ahead for good, 7-6, with 6:07 to play. He scored the first goal of the season as well for the Stags, putting Fairfield ahead 1-0 5:06 into the game. Greenfield also picked up two ground balls in the victory.
